This high-speed, mobile data and Internet access technology is fast enough to support a wide range of advanced data services (with average data speeds between 75-135Kbps), including video and music clips, full picture and video messaging, high-speed color Internet access, and email on the go. Phone Features Using breakthrough ModeShift technology from Motorola, the Motorola Zine ZN5 presents you with only the controls you need, at the time you need them--instantly transforming from phone to imaging device and back with the touch of a button. Simply slide the lens cover open to illuminate ModeShift Technology, transforming the full-featured mobile phone into an ultra-fast 5-megapixel camera, complete with auto-focus, low-light optimization, and a bright Xenon flash. This Motorola phone includes the innovative CrystalTalk technology, which automatically accounts for background noise during a call and adjusts the audio quality based on ambient noise conditions to provide the optimal conversational experience. CrystalTalk also reduces the volume of the background noise picked up by the microphone during a call, making it possible to be more easily heard over the phone while in a noisy environment. Handsfree communication is easy thanks to the Bluetooth wireless connectivity (version 2.0), which includes profiles for communication headset, handsfree car kits, and printing to Bluetooth-enabled printers. With the A2DP Bluetooth profile, you can stream your music to a pair of compatible Bluetooth stereo headphones. Bad hardware specs! December 26, 2008 Steve Simons 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I will start this review off by saying the the MotoZINE is really kind of a cool phone. It has a certain "wow" factor. The 5 megapixel camera is great, it's actually a better camera then most 5 mp standalone digital cameras. It's a beautiful phone too, and has quite a few cool features.
However, there are some issues, or rather, one main issue:
The processor of the phone is not very good at all. It can't handle multiple button presses or multiple tasks happening. When just a few things happen, it commonly results in the phone resetting (which is what you should hope for) or the phone just getting stuck on the home screen(which is what you don't want), sometimes for 15-20 minutes until you finally decide to take the battery out and restart the phone.
Often, if the phone gets stuck on the home screen and rights itself, you can't call anyone for a very long time. Everytime you try to call someone, you get an error message that says "Tapi server is disconnected".
One story I would like to present: My car battery was dead one day(i had stupidly left my lights on), and i was trying to get ahold of my girlfriend because she lived very close and I was going to see if her parents would come and give my car a jump.
It was below freezing outside, with 30 mph winds, so you can definitely assume it was freezing cold.
As i tried to call her, and text her, the issues got ridiculous. I was barely even able to talk to her for 1 minute or so before the phone resetting, and consequently, dropping the call. In texting, it took me 45 minutes to get my message across to her.
In my opionion, I do not recommend the MotoZINE.
If you were to get any phone, i'd recommend the motoROKR
Trouble,Trouble, Trouble December 20, 2008 Stephen Langenthal 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have had T-Mobile for almost ten years and have had many phones - Eriksson, Samsung and three previous Motorola models. I bought my Zine from T-Mobile. I had it for two days and returned it. It was the worst cellphone I have ever had. For example, notwithstanding many calls to T-Mobile customer service, it would not download my favorites. If I put the phone down, no matter how gently, it would turn itself off and then back on. The software and the instruction manual are extremely difficult to use and in many cases do not agree with each other. The manual, for example, says that you can silence the keypad sound but does not explain how. When I called T-Mobile to ask about this, technical support told me that the keypad could not be silenced. Several hours later I figured out how to do it wihout instruction. My advice is to avoid this phone, run away from it, don't even think about it. It should be withdrawn from sale by Motorola and T-Mobile
Not Impressed December 18, 2008 C. Meisner (Houston,TX) Got this phone thru T-Mobile (DON'T EVER USE T-MOBILE-- SEE THEIR REVIEWS) Thus, I cant tell if the weak reception is from the company or the phone, but it seems to drop a lot of calls. The photos from the phone appear heavily pixilated, and not much better than other good camera phones. The buttons are small for my male hands, and I keep hitting toggle button, messing everything up. The answer key is next to the send key, and I lose many calls hitting the wrong key. Maybe it's me, but unless I leave the phone locked all the time, ringtones, data entry settings, and call notifications seem to change. If I leave the lock on, by the time I pull it out, and switch the phone on, the call has already gone to messaging. The phone looks nice, and has a nice big clear screen. It seems intuitively incorrect for the heavy part of the phone to be on the top/screen part. If you drop it (not recommended) the back cove pops off, but no significant damage. Call volume is 7/10. Speakerphone OK. This is not an intuitive phone, or I am not an intuitive phone user. Nice, slim, and sleek. You need good nails to flip the charging cover off every night. Battery lasts one day of mild to moderate use.
Superb hardware, responsive software, great price, clunky configuration December 3, 2008 A. Khalak 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have had this phone for about a week, and have been able to put it through its paces.
Pros: The call voice quality and the picture quality are excellent. The MP3 player is also very good, and pauses when you receive a call. It can hold a 4Gig memory card, which will capture lots of full resolutions photos. The phone has bluetooth and wifi connectivity, and you can browse the web using a wifi connection. The handset itself is very ergonomic, and the test that I found on it shows it to have impressive durability. (see [...]) The computer switches "modes" quickly, so that if you take the phone out of your pocket and flip open the lens cover, it behaves just like a regular digital camera and you can take a photo right away. Then, when you close the lens cover, it goes back to behaving like a phone.
Cons: The adjusting some of the settings takes a while to figure out, and it took me a while to figure out how to get the browser to use wifi, etc. The video recording mode is essentially useless. I have also found some problems with taking close up photos in low light, since the flash is too bright.
Great phone, great camera December 2, 2008 Kaitai Treekillas (Cambridge, MA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I've owned this phone for several weeks, and am highly impressed. The call quality is excellent, and the picture quality is impressive. The other day a buddy was looking at the pics, and his comment was simply, "these are real pictures." That's pretty much the whole reason to own the phone right there. A couple of complaints. First, texting is a pain. Perhaps it's my Paul Bunyan-like fingers, but my initial texts were little better than half sentences before they were inadvertently sent. Not a big deal for me since I don't text much, but something to keep in mind. Second, the software has proven to be a bit buggy. I've had a few instances where, after turning the phone on, I couldn't access my music because the phone wasn't able to refresh the media list (thus the 4 stars). I've contacted customer support, but to no avail. I assume there will be some sort of firmware update soon, or hope there will be anyway. It's only happened twice, so again, not a big deal. I purchased this phone primarily for the camera, and have not been disappointed. I do hope I don't sprout an extra ear due to the high radiation, as mentioned in a previous review.
